Laying Out Your Living Room Furniture Like a Pro

The living room is one of the most essential and frequently used spaces of the house, so it follows that making this venue the most enjoyable is well worth the time and effort. However, many don't know the basic principles of design to make the living room user-friendly. Read on to discover these interior design tricks that will make any space a pleasure in which to spend time.

Consider the Focal Point

Is the view outside the window a city skyline or a well-manicured front yard? The living room is an ideal setting from which to enjoy this scenery, so the furniture should be situated accordingly. Similarly, living rooms may be arranged as a venue for watching sports and movies with the family, in which case the layout should be conducive to these activities and pointed toward the television. Wherever the focal point of the room, designers recommend that seating should be arranged so one may view the focal point in the most comfortable way. For example, if guests will be enjoying looking outside, then the sofa should be positioned opposite the window to allow them ease of view without craning their necks. Use of the furniture must also be considered; if one plans to lie down on the couch to watch the tube, the television should be positioned perpendicular to the couch so one can look straight ahead.

Plan for Seating

Will the room be used to entertain guests frequently? Or is the living room primarily occupied by the family? Plan the seating around the number of expected visitors and who will most often be in the room. If the living room is small, sofas are an ideal option as they have the largest seating to size ratio, whereas chairs and loveseats take up more space in the room while offering relatively fewer spots for guests. When it's time to throw a party, the room will look like it was designed by a pro if ample seating is already incorporated into the room's design instead of having to awkwardly shuffle metal folding chairs out of the closet.

Look at the Traffic Pattern

No, this doesn't mean to think about the number of cars passing by. Rather, when planning where the furniture will be placed in the living room, consider where the doors are located and what rooms are adjacent to the living room. How will family members and guests be traversing the space? Be sure that one can easily maneuver from their seat to the bathroom or kitchen without tripping. Also, consider the size of the furniture before purchasing the piece. If shopping for a studio efficiency, perhaps a six-by-two-foot coffee table is not the most practical choice. In keeping with basic feng shui, guests should be able to walk seamlessly to the door as opposed to shuffling between a bookcase and floor lamp.

The principles of design are intuitive and serve to make living comfortable and enjoyable through useful and aesthetically pleasing furniture layout. Use these tips to get started, and house visitors will be amazed at what a pleasant experience they have in a well-designed space.

Common Features of Leather Sofas

If you are looking at the leather sofas available for your home, you should think about a few details. Of course, price is a major factor to keep in mind, so be sure to come up with a budget. But you will still probably find plenty of products that meet your needs. Here are some tips on narrowing down all your choices.

You should make sure the color you choose works well for the room where you plan to put the couch. In most cases, black, brown, tan, and white are popular because they match practically any room. So, if you frequently change the color scheme in the room, you might want to stick with one of these shades. However, in some cases, certain colors will not look good. For example, if you have all brown furniture in a room, a brown or at least tan couch would probably match better than a black one. And if you have kids, pets, or some other reason that your furniture tends to acquire stains and spots over time, you should probably choose a shade that is darker than white. If you prefer bolder colors, though, you should look at leather sofas in red, blue, yellow, and other brighter shades.

You also need to think about how you plan to use the couch. If you only need a space for up to three people to sit, you can get a basic sofa. But if you want to offer the ultimate comfort to guests at your home, you might choose one that reclines. Decide whether you want all the seats to recline or if you would be fine with only a few reclining. If you often have guests spend the night and do not have a full guest bedroom with a bed, a sleeper may be the best option for you. It all depends on your specific needs.

Some leather sofas have even more specialized options. For instance, they might have hidden storage compartments where you can hide the remote control. They could have extra padding and cup holders, as well. Some even offer fold-down tables so you can easily eat while relaxing. If these extra options interest you, be sure to let the salesperson know as you browse leather sofas at the store.

These are just some of the most important decisions to make before you make your purchase. Once you decide how much you can afford to pay for your new furniture, you should take into account the needs of your household and any guests who come over. That way, you can feel proud to show off your sofa any time.

Furniture Stores Offer a Great Selection

Are you in the mood for a change? Have you decided to redecorate a room or perhaps the entire house? If you are taking on a project of this nature you will more than likely be replacing certain items in each room you are redecorating. With so many choices available, it will be worth your while to pay a visit to multiple furniture stores until you find exactly what you are looking for.

While most furniture stores offer a variety of items to choose from not every store has a great selection. Some stores carry more modern items while others are more contemporary. It may take more than one trip to more than one business before you are able to make your final decision. Some people make a decision based solely on what they like and others may make a decision based on what they like and what they can afford. While most furniture stores offer financing, some places can be tougher than others to get approved for credit. Not every company has the same amount of lenders that they work with, so financing options may be limited at some places.

It is common for furniture stores to have their showrooms divided into areas of the home. This way you can shop only for the items you need. They are usually divided into living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, a children's section, and the clearance area. Some will even have a design center, where a design expert will help you custom design the area of your home you looking to furnish. It is quite common for these types of businesses to have frequent sales, especially around holidays. Often they will offer discounts on groups of items, especially if you buy a package and furnish an entire room or multiple rooms. If you can find all the items that you are looking for this type of deal can be a great way to get quite a bit of merchandise for a great price.

If you are financing it is important to understand the terms before you make your purchase. Many companies will run a no interest special for a certain number of years with approved credit. Some companies offer their own credit card with monthly payments to fit everyone's budget. There can be some differences between companies when it comes to delivery charges. Some businesses offer free delivery while others charge a delivery fee. If you are using a store credit card to make your purchase, it is important to check if the store requires any money up front. Some companies allow you to finance the entire purchase including sales tax and delivery, while others require you to pay the sales tax and delivery charges up front before delivery is scheduled.

Even if you are not ready to make a purchase furniture stores can be a fun place to spend some time. We all like to dream about what it would be like to be able to afford whatever we like, and sometimes window shopping can be a fun experience even if you can't make the purchase.

Which Sofas Are Right for You?

Have you just recently moved into your own place? Did you just buy a big house with a lot of rooms to fill? Maybe you haven't relocated in any way, but your furniture is still in dire need of replacement. What should you look for to distinguish quality sofas from impostors? Much like everything else, if you want to get the most for your money in terms of couch shopping, then it is going to take some work. Be ready to sit, bend, dig, turn and reach to determine whether or not the sofas you are interested in are up to par.

Probably the most important task in couch comparing is to test out the cushions. You guessed it. To do this you will have to actually sit on the couch. It is important to not only test the comfort of a particular seat, but also the elasticity of the cushion. After sitting on a cushion, does the seat quickly return to its original shape? If not, chances are that the seats of the couch will not last as long as you would like.

The springs in couches are almost as significant as the cushions. There are generally three main types of furniture springs. They are serpentine, eight-way tied and four-way tied. Serpentine springs are commonly referred to as "no sag springs." Sofas with these springs tend to be on the cheaper side because they offer very little support. Eight-way tied springs actually form a webbed support system as the springs crisscross in eight different directions. These higher end varieties actually flex when weight is put on them, so they allow for movement without compromising support. Finally, four-way tied springs are a middle of the road alternative to the expensive eight-way tied and the cheaper serpentine options. Obviously, the four-way tied springs cross in four directions. This option is actually just as durable as the eight-way variety, but it takes less labor to assemble, so the sofas that use this method will be a little cheaper.

The next thing to look at is the frame of the couch. You may have noticed that some couches have frames that are screwed together while some are simply stapled together. Though it may seem that the screwed frames would be more durable, this is not always the case. The thing to look for is whether or not the joints of the frame are glued properly along with either being stapled or screwed correctly. If a couch has a frame constructed with glue and staples, and it is done the right way, then it can last a lifetime. The staple construction, again, is less labor intensive, and therefore the couch will probably be less expensive than a comparable screwed together model.

There you have it. All the information you need to know to make an informed sofa purchase.

Choosing The Right Bedroom Furniture for Small Rooms

When you move into your first apartment or starter home or if you live in a large city and have only a studio to work with, buying bedroom furniture can be a monumental task. If you have a small space, the right size and even the right finish on your furniture can make a big difference in the look and feel of the room. Here are things you should look for when shopping to avoid decorating mistakes with small spaces.

Multipurpose or Multifunction Furniture

Beds can be a great item and it can have multiple purposes in your space. For instance, many beds have features such as under-the-bed storage with pull out drawers. Some have high mattresses or box springs that allow storage space below them, and bunk beds often have desks or work space below. In small spaces, bedroom furniture needs to have just as much function as much as it does form.

Fool the Eye

Tricking the eye to see more space is essential in small rooms. The placement of furniture in the room is important in making it appear larger than it really is. Placing a bed against the longest wall of the room frees up floor space for use of a rug, which can draw the eye in and gives a more interesting focal point. Buying bedroom furniture such as a bed with a tall headboard creates the illusion that the room is taller, and therefore larger, than it appears. Light-colored finishes instead of dark wood stains are better for small rooms as well.

Size is Everything

When purchasing bedroom furniture, you should also keep in mind that buying bigger is not better. Even though the California king bed appeals to you, it would fill up your room and leave no room for other more interesting decor. Purchase with comfort in mind, but don't forsake style and your budget. A twin bed or queen may fit better and will allow room for nightstands, chairs and other items for function and style.

The bed is typically the focal point of the room, but items such as accent chairs, tables, chests, and dressers or vanities are essential to the livability of the room. In a small space, chairs can be a challenge, but a small accent chair can serve as a nice addition to the room, as well as provide a space other than the bed for sitting when dressing or relaxing. With chests of drawers in small spaces, taller is better. Although jewelry armoires are mainly intended for small items, they can also be used for clothing or lingerie in a small space. Taller chests of drawers are better because they take up less floor space. As for nightstands or tables, they are also essential pieces of bedroom furniture that can serve as places to put phones, alarm clocks, candles or other items required for comfort and use.

Although buying bedroom furniture can be expensive and time consuming, a professional sales team can assist you in meeting the needs of your budget and showing you the right pieces for small or large rooms. They can offer you the option of choosing from popular brands in a variety of finishes and sizes as well as decor items to complement your furniture.

4 Tips for Buying New Living Room Furniture

If you are in the market for new living room furniture, there are several things you need to consider. Though it sounds easy just to waltz into a store and pick out the prettiest of pieces, you need to plan ahead for the space.

Material

When you begin looking at living room furniture, one of the first things you should think about is material. Sofas and loveseats come in a variety of materials, including leather, microfiber, and other upholstery fabrics. You will need to think about which will compliment your lifestyle. If you have pets or young children, you may want to stick to a microfiber because it is easy to clean. If you want a more formal room, you can choose from a variety of upholstery, from carpet to suede. If you have a more modern taste, leather is also a nice option and it comes in various colors.

Sectional or Separates?

When it comes to choosing a sofa, many people are faced with choosing \between sectionals and separates. Sectionals have their benefits - they can seat many people, they often come with built-in recliners or sofa beds, and they make a nice statement in a room. Separate sofas and loveseats, however, are more formal than sectionals. You will also have more options when it comes to arranging them. If you are a fan of frequently rearranging, a separate sofa and loveseat may be a better choice.

Do You Really Need End Tables?

Another question many people often have is whether or not end tables are necessary. This is dependent on a few factors. End tables are great for storing your regularly used items like remote controls, lamps, and magazines. If your space is too small, then just skip them and save yourself the extra cost.

Is There Enough Space for Everything?

Before you purchase any living room furniture, you need to make sure you do not buy too much or buy something that is too large for the space you have. The size of many items can be deceiving. When you are in a large store and looking at each piece separately, they do not seem as big. Before you shop, map out the available space and decide where everything will go. Measure the walls and area where the pieces may fit, and be sure to take the tape measure to the store with you so you can measure items as you go.

Getting new living room furniture can be fun, but you need to be prepared. Do some research and planning ahead of time so that you can have just the right pieces for your room.

Bedroom Furniture That Gives Your Space Personality and Comfort

When it comes to your private space, you want to have the best furnishings that provide storage and add personal style to your room. This is the bedroom furniture you need to make this space your favorite area of your home.

Fireplace

Portable fireplaces offer charm and whimsy and are perfect for relaxing with after a long day. Install one at the end of your bed so you can take advantage of the heat and light in your room. Whether you are doing paperwork for your job or reading a book, this addition makes you feel like you are living in luxury.

Lighting

Consider adding wall sconces to brighten up a smaller space and give it grandeur. If you want to make your area appear brighter, recessed lighting along your closet and around your bedroom furniture will work. You can install decorative light fixture covers that match your home's décor.

Chest and Drawers

A matching chest and dresser set in deep natural wood, such as maple or walnut, are pieces of bedroom furniture that will last you for decades and work with any type of decor. If you have modern furnishings, these pieces will blend well. They also work with classic styles, such as wood floors with white walls. You can choose a plain finish that shows off the natural wood grain or pick one that has ornate etchings in pretty designs, such as floral patterns or trendy geometric patterns that match your personal taste best.

Table

There are many reasons to add a table to your decor. A table breaks up a large, empty space. For smaller areas, it adds fine storage. Choose a table that is low to the ground, preferably level to your bed, so you can place clothing and work attire on it. You can also use your table for reading, placing candles or bedside lamps on, or to display decorative throw pillows for a homey appeal. This bedroom furniture is uncommon in many private areas but has many benefits that you can employ.

Accessories

A shag rug, mosaic lamp, and large detailed mirror add that final touch of pizazz to any room that is lacking bedroom furniture with personality. You can mix and match these things to make your space match you in many ways.

Whether you want to upgrade your private space or want to feel cozier and comfortable in your room, your options are endless.
