A settee is shorter than a sofa but longer than a loveseat. This long seat or bench can comfortably accommodate two or more people. The back and arms of the sofa are typically made of carved wood or upholstered fabric. The settee was originally popular in the 17th century, but is now found in many mid-century designs.
An ottoman consists of a padded, upholstered seat or bench that lacks a back or arms. This piece of furniture can be used as a stool or footstool and can also serve as a stand-in coffee table. Often sold coordinating with armchairs or gliders, ottomans are sometimes referred to as footstools, tuffets, hassocks or pouffes. Some ottomans are hollow and can be used as storage.
A French word that literally translates to long chair, the chaise is a typically a backed upholstered chair that has an elongated seating area with exposed legs. The original chaise lounge is actually an English mispronunciation of the proper word chaise longue, one whose error dates all the way back to the 1850s. Today both versions are accepted, though the former is by far the more popular. The basic form of this seat is an upholstered couch in the shape of a chair with four legs. The result resembles a sort of daybed that has a headrest at one end and can have a backrest or be backless.
With personally curated art and emblems of her childhood, Aahana Kumra's home, designed by Shireen Mahna, is at once trad and tony. For Kumra, the home is a manifestation twenty years in the making, and one that nods equally to her Lucknowi roots and her life in Mumbai. "There are whiffs of Kashmir, London and Delhi too. It's a collection of all my favourite places," she says, adding that the vision was largely informed by English design, because "I travel a lot to London". But really, as I step inside, what strikes me isn't the English-ness at all, but rather the glimmers of India that peep through the pastels.
The simplest of furniture, these armless, backless multi-person seats probably date back to the beginning of civilization. While couches and chairs take the lion's share of attention in the furniture world, benches are versatile, which makes them an excellent answer to many decorating needs at home.
Also called truckle or trumple beds, they are a pair of beds: a twin bed and a slightly smaller bed on rollers or casters directly underneath. Like bunk beds, they are ideal for saving space in a room. Many trundle beds can be made to pop up to be the same height as the top mattress — mimicking a full-size bed.
Today Architectural Digest is welcomed by RuPaul to tour his dazzling Beverly Hills home. When the 'Drag Race' star and husband Georges LeBar acquired their home they enlisted esteemed AD100 designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard and architect Christopher Hatch McLean to help bring their 1980s palazzo to life. Together they transformed the property into an enchanting homage to Old Hollywood injecting the glamor of 1930s regency throughout. Bursting with color and pattern, RuPaul wanted the design of his home to evoke joy in those who step inside its doors - “The house is a touchstone to remind me to inspire people to feel the magic that’s seemingly so elusive these days,” RuPaul asserts. “It’s meant to be whimsical and fun. None of it is to be taken too seriously—except for love and kindness.”
A sleigh bed is easily recognized by the scrolling curves on the top of both the headboard and footboard that appear to be in one fluid motion, replicating horse-drawn sleighs. The structure of this bed is made of sturdy, solid wood in a variety of tones and styles. Dating back to the 19th century, the smooth curves and sleigh-like appearance were preferred by Napoleon and European aristocrats. Once the style reached America, it became an immediate fixture in the Southeast region and can be seen in historic Southern homes as well as modern, traditional homes to this day.
Typically found in more modern settings, a platform bed features a raised, flat structure that supports only a mattress. They provide necessary support through slats or solid paneling. Because of this architecture, there is no need for a box spring or mattress foundation. Many platform styles feature clean lines and a solid color. They can also be outfitted with storage drawers under the bed.
