Furniture Glossary: Beds, Trundle Bed

Also called truckle or trumple beds, they are a pair of beds: a twin bed and a slightly smaller bed on rollers or casters directly underneath. Like bunk beds, they are ideal for saving space in a room. Many trundle beds can be made to pop up to be the same height as the top mattress — mimicking a full-size bed.

Inside RuPaul’s Fabulous Beverly Hills Mansion | Open Door | Architectur...

Today Architectural Digest is welcomed by RuPaul to tour his dazzling Beverly Hills home. When the 'Drag Race' star and husband Georges LeBar acquired their home they enlisted esteemed AD100 designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard and architect Christopher Hatch McLean to help bring their 1980s palazzo to life. Together they transformed the property into an enchanting homage to Old Hollywood injecting the glamor of 1930s regency throughout. Bursting with color and pattern, RuPaul wanted the design of his home to evoke joy in those who step inside its doors - “The house is a touchstone to remind me to inspire people to feel the magic that’s seemingly so elusive these days,” RuPaul asserts. “It’s meant to be whimsical and fun. None of it is to be taken too seriously—except for love and kindness.”

Furniture Glossary: Beds, Sleigh Bed

A sleigh bed is easily recognized by the scrolling curves on the top of both the headboard and footboard that appear to be in one fluid motion, replicating horse-drawn sleighs. The structure of this bed is made of sturdy, solid wood in a variety of tones and styles. Dating back to the 19th century, the smooth curves and sleigh-like appearance were preferred by Napoleon and European aristocrats. Once the style reached America, it became an immediate fixture in the Southeast region and can be seen in historic Southern homes as well as modern, traditional homes to this day.

Furniture Glossary: Beds, Platform Bed

Typically found in more modern settings, a platform bed features a raised, flat structure that supports only a mattress. They provide necessary support through slats or solid paneling. Because of this architecture, there is no need for a box spring or mattress foundation. Many platform styles feature clean lines and a solid color. They can also be outfitted with storage drawers under the bed.

Furniture Glossary: Beds, Four-Poster Bed

This style of bed (similar to a canopy bed) is somewhat dramatic due to its four vertical columns — one at each corner. Some styles contain a flat wooden panel that rests at the top of the columns. Historically (dating back to the 16th century), theses pieces are made of oak. Aside from the aesthetic, the columns were used to hold bed curtains that could surround the sleeper from drafts.

Daybeds can be described as a hybrid of a bed and chaise lounge or sofa. They can be made of wood, metal or a combination of both materials. They typically boast a back and sides and are the size of a twin bed. The bed may feature a trundle (slightly smaller bed built in below the top area). Genn Franks’ Modern Art Deco Maximalist Abode | Home and Texture House T...

Today’s house tour features Genn Franks. Genn is a Memphis, Tennessee based artist who takes it to the max when it comes to her home. She leaves no wall behind when decorating her pad, because every blank space is the canvas for imagination.

Genn’s eclectic home shines light on the Black experience, highlighting everything from Black films to Black music. Her space is a creator’s dream. Luckily, her neighborhood is artist-based living, with a community filled with like-minded individuals. While a lot of artists reflect on Black tragedy and trauma, Genn and her home highlight Black joy to the fullest extent. Furniture Glossary: Beds, Captain's Bed

This type of bed features a visible platform base with built-in storage inside the platform, such as drawers or cubbies. The unique name derives from its use on ships where space was limited and storage was essential. Modern takes on this bed include storage built into the headboard, footboard or compartments surrounding the bed. Its sturdy structure and optimal storage make it a practical solution for small apartments and children's bedrooms.

David Quarles IV’s Mid-Century Style Residence | Home and Texture House ...

This Home & Texture House Tour spotlights the home of Memphis, Tennessee-based interior designer David Quarles IV. As a result of his career in jewelry design, interior decorating, visual merchandising, and fitness — David says he views creativity not simply as an activity, but a way of life.

This talented expert’s mid-century style home is a cultural cornucopia which embodies that philosophy. David’s Afro-Caribbean, Black American, European and Indigenous-American roots are infused throughout his spaces. He draws inspiration from textures, patterns, the colors, and other artisanal goods commonly produced in the countries from where his heritage originates. David is also an artist through and through which is apparent with vibrant oil paintings and drawings decorating the walls of his home.

Furniture Glossary: Beds, Canopy Bed

A canopy bed is a decorative piece akin to a four-poster bed. A canopy is identified by four vertical posts at each corner extending up from below the mattress, forming a frame above the bed. A piece of fabric draped over the posts and frame creates a ceiling or canopy effect over the bed.

Furniture Glossary: Beds, Bunk Bed

Familiar to many a sibling, a bunk bed is a type of structure in which one bed frame is stacked on top of another. The benefit of a bunk bed is that it allows two people to share a sleeping space without losing floor space. This may be why they are perfect for children around the same age or in smaller rooms such as dormitory rooms or camp cabins. The beds are supported by four pillars, one for each corner. To reach the top bed (surrounded by a railing for safety), a ladder is used.

Where Did the Ottoman Come From?

The ottoman traces its roots to furnishing practices in the Ottoman Empire, where it was the central piece of residential seating, generally designed as a low wooden platform intended to be piled with cushions. It was first designed as sectional furniture that wrapped around three walls of a room, before evolving into smaller versions that fit into the corner of a room or circular padded seats surrounding a column or pole in a public room.

The ottoman was eventually brought to Europe from the Ottoman Empire in the late 18th century and named after its place of origin. The earliest known instance of the use of the name is ottomane in French in 1729, and in the course of a generation it made its way into every boudoir, but it appears originally to have been much larger than at present.

The first known recorded use in English occurs in one of Thomas Jefferson's memorandum books from 1789: "P[ai]d. for an Ottomane of velours d'Utrecht." Over time, European ottomans took on a circular or octagonal shape through the 19th century, with seating divided in the center by arms or by a central, padded column that might hold a plant or statue. The ottoman began to have hinged seats to make use of the empty space inside which can be used to store items.

The ottoman footstool, a closely allied piece of furniture, was an upholstered footstool on four legs, which could also be used as a fireside seat, the seat covered with carpet, embroidery or beadwork. By the 20th century the word ottoman had come to encompass both forms.

How To Bring Cool Factor To A Home In The Burbs!

After making the move from Toronto’s west end to the suburbs, a young family called on Emilia Wisniewski, principal designer at Studio 1NINE1, to help them up the cool factor in their new home. “We were able to completely change the look of the house without moving any walls,” says Emilia. The high-contrast main floor has plenty of wow-worthy moments, from a matte black feature wall in the foyer to a custom dining hutch with ribbed glass in the kitchen.

Ottoman

An ottoman is a piece of furniture. Generally ottomans have neither backs nor arms. They may be an upholstered low couch or a smaller cushioned seat used as a table, stool or footstool. The seat may have hinges and form a lid for the inside hollow, which can be used for storage of linen, magazines or other items, making it a form of storage furniture. The smaller version is usually placed near to an armchair or sofa as part of living room decor or may be used as a fireside seat.

Ottoman footstools are often sold as coordinating furniture with armchairs, sofas or gliders. Other names for this piece of furniture include footstool, tuffet, hassock, pouf (sometimes spelled pouffe), in Shropshire, England the old dialect word tumpty may be used, or in New Zealand and Newfoundland a humpty.

Wing Chair

A wing chair (also, wing-back chair or wing-back) is an easy chair or club chair with "wings" attached to the back of the chair, typically, but not always, stretching down to the arm rest. The purpose of the "wings" was to shield the occupant of the chair from drafts, and to trap the heat from a fireplace in the area where the person would be sitting. Hence, in the past these were often used near a fireplace. Currently, most examples of wing chairs are fully upholstered with exposed wood legs, but many of the oldest examples of wing chairs have an exposed frame with padded cushions at the seat, arm rests, back and sometimes wings.

They were first introduced in England during the 1600s, and the basic design has remained unchanged since. They did not become popular until the 1720s.

Though there are many types of wing chairs, there are two standard wing styles - the flat wing and the scroll wing. There are also bat wings and butterfly wings, among other types. The length, depth, vertical position and shape of the wings may vary from chair to chair.

Couch Materials

A couch consists of a frame, springs, padding, and a covering. The frame is usually made of wood, but can also be made of steel, plastic or laminated boards. Sofa padding is made from foam, down, feathers, fabric or a combination thereof. Sofa coverings are usually made out of soft leather, corduroy or linen. Couches commonly have springs under the padding for more support, although some don't.

Types of Couches

The most common types of couches include the two-seater, sometimes referred to as a loveseat, and the sofa. The loveseat is designed for seating two people, while the sofa has more than two cushion seats. A sectional sofa, often just referred to as a "sectional", is formed from multiple sections (typically two, three, and four) and usually includes at least two pieces which join at an angle of 90 degrees or slightly greater. Sectional sofas are used to wrap around walls or other furniture.

Other variants include the divan, the fainting couch (backless or partial-backed) and the canapé (an ornamental three-seater). To conserve space, some sofas double as beds in the form of sofa beds, daybeds, or futons.

A furniture set consisting of a sofa with two matching chairs is known as a "chesterfield suite" or "living-room suite". In the UK, the word chesterfield was used to refer to any couch in the 1900s. A chesterfield now describes a deep buttoned sofa, usually made from leather, with arms and back of the same height. The first chesterfield, with its distinctive deep buttoned, quilted leather upholstery and lower seat base, was commissioned by Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694–1773).

The Couch

A couch, also known as a sofa, settee, or chesterfield, is a cushioned item of furniture for seating multiple people (although it is not uncommon for a single person to use a couch alone). It is commonly found in the form of a bench with upholstered armrests and is often fitted with springs and tailored cushion and pillows. Although a couch is used primarily for seating, it may be used for sleeping. In homes, couches are normally put in the family room, living room, den, or lounge. They are sometimes also found in non-residential settings such as hotels, lobbies of commercial offices, waiting rooms, and bars. Couches can also vary in size, color, and design.

What Are People Saying?

"Lainey's was amazing. We had been on the hunt for a new couch for months and were having a lot of issues finding the right style for what we thought was a reasonable value. As soon as we walked into Laney's we were greeted by the staff, and made to feel very comfortable walking around and trying things out. We found a couch almost instantly that fit the bill, and we had a really great conversation with the staff who was able  to answer all of our questions and give us space and time to make a decision without feeling pressured or rushed. I felt they were very fair.

When it came time for the delivery, these guys drove over 2.5 hours in traffic to my home, and were nothing short of highly professional and kind. They even agreed to do a last minute removal for me as we had changed our minds a little late in the game about how we were getting rid of our existing couch. They were timely, friendly, and very careful with our couch and I have to say we were very impressed and love love love our new couch! I'd highly recommend these guys as the experience was exactly what I felt we needed."

What Are People Saying?

"After deciding we wanted to go with a costal theme in our family room, we stopped by Lainey's. We had been there a few times before, but never knew what we wanted. This time we knew what we wanted and had our measurements with us. We were greeted by a very nice lady, who we later found out was Lainey. She was kind, patient and so helpful. She helped us customize the perfect size sectional. We selected our fabric, arm style, seat depth, etc.

We received the call that our furniture was ready quite some time before their estimated time. The furniture was delivered by a couple of very nice guys. Everything went better than expected. We are thoroughly happy with our sectional. We love Lainey's."

Today AD is welcomed to Greenwich Village in New York by Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent for a tour of their freshly renovated family home. For those who have been following this couple and design duo extraordinaire through the years, their "new" place may look oddly familiar - they actually lived their from 2013 to 2016 before relocating west. The apartment wasn't available when they first returned to New York but when life afforded them a chance to revisit one of their relationship's foundational settings, they knew they had to act. “Conversations about having children, conversations about planning a wedding. It’s where all the dreaming began for us.”

Transitional Furniture Style

Transitional furniture mixes together both traditional and contemporary design. Many consumers choose this style because it enables them to pull together an eclectic look marrying old and new. Transitional furniture need not be oversized, overbearing or overly ornate. Softer curves, subtler patterns and controlled carvings make modern-day transitional furniture lighter and more compatible with 21st century lifestyles without losing traditional style.

Contemporary Furniture Style

Contemporary furniture is subtle and urban in its appeal. It is born of more modern styles, such as Bauhaus and post-modern. While an offshoot of modern design, contemporary furniture has softer lines and deeper upholstery than its parent styles. Contemporary furniture has clean lines with soft edges. Chair legs and arms are simple, either square or round. Upholstery fabrics are either one solid color or have a subtle pattern. Contemporary tables have little if any ornate carvings. Inlaid patterns, if used, are geometric. Upholstered furniture is low to the ground with squared arms. The backs may be tufted with large, fabric-covered buttons.

Traditional Furniture Style

Traditional furniture offers elegance and romance and a touch of old-world design. It is associated with such styles as William and Mary, Queen Anne, Victorian and Chippendale. The styles call for ornate furnishings with elaborate carving and emphasis on motifs and signature looks. Traditional chairs boast such features as turned or cabriole legs, ball-and-claw feet or bun feet, arched backs and rolled arms. Table legs resemble matching chair legs, and tabletops often have ornately trimmed edges. Motifs such as pineapples or seashells may be included in carvings in the backs of chairs or tabletop inlays. Upholstered furnishings, such as sofas, often have wood trim and large, dominant footings.
