Foyer Lighting - Don't Make This Mistake!

A well-placed chandelier in a two-story foyer doesn't just light up the entryway, but also adds character and ambiance.

One of the biggest mistakes that I see in client homes is that they have not thought about how the chandelier is going to look from the second story.

Let me give you an example. From below this chandelier looks fine. However when you head up the stairs and are on the second story looking down – now what do you see… raw bulbs and harsh lighting. It’s not a good look.

Here’s the tip: When selecting a chandelier for a two story foyer think about how it is going to look from below and from above when you are on the second story.

Take a look at this new foyer light. From below it looks good and now when I head up the stairs to the second floor it looks just as good. I am not looking into a bunch of bulbs and harsh lighting.

Keep this in mind if you have a two story dining room or family room that you can look down into.

These little details can make a big difference. Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to a Smart Interior.

Coffee Tables: Why We Need Them and How To Choose One

Coffee tables have been around since the Victorian Era. Meaning they have been around for about 1000 years. They have played many roles throughout the years and will continue to do such. They have been used as centerpieces in homes, places over which important conversations have taken place, home to snacks during important sporting events, areas where families come to gather together. They have been made out many materials like wood, metal, glass, plastic, and many other things.

Coffee tables are an essential part of any home décor style. We need them for their practical purpose just as much as we need them for their decor purposes. They are normally placed in the center of the living or family room over a rug or just on the ground. The coffee table is meant to compliment your sofas, rugs, wall décor and paint by tying them all together as the finishing touch to any home.

They are also made to serve a practical purpose. If you plan on having one in your family room then it will most likely be the place to put your feet when having a conversation or watching a movie. It can be a place to play a card game or board game with your kids. A place to have snacks and drink during games and movies. Or maybe a place where your kids can get homework done and store their school supplies. When placed in a living room it can serve the purpose of holding décor items or maybe hold the occasional beverage while conversing with friends and guests. No matter where you place it will serve a great purpose.

There are many questions to think about when choosing a coffee table because you definitely want the right one for your home. First, ask yourself where you will be placing it and what it will be used for. If it will be experiencing a lot of wear and tear don't go with glass unless you want the possibilities of scratches and a possible broken top. Instead, go with metal or wood as they are more durable.

Second, what shape and size do you want? Do you want a rectangular, circular, oval, or square table? If being placed in front of a sectional couch a square table is better. If you have younger kids a circular table is safer because it doesn't have sharp edges. Whereas a rectangular or oval table is great to be placed in front of any type of couch.

Lastly, you need to think of your décor style. Be sure to choose a table that complements your furniture and décor you already have in your house. Make it feel like an extension of what you already have, not an odd piece that sticks out (unless that is your décor style).

Enjoy a coffee table in your home and have fun while choosing one. It doesn't have to be hard, it just has to be done right. With these steps you now have, choosing your next coffee table will be a breeze. And don't forget to make memories over your new furniture addition!

9 Pro Tips for Arranging Furniture in Your Home

Here a professional room-stager and designer offers tricks to help make your rooms look their very best.

By Marie Proeller Hueston

Stripped of all its furnishings, an empty room can be intimidating — or inspiring! For design consultant Robin Long Mayer, it’s definitely the latter. In her work as an editor for CountryLiving and New York Spaces magazines and as the principal of Robin Mayer Design, she has learned a thing or two about the optimal placement of sofas, tables, beds and accessories that fill our homes. While the ideal arrangement in your own rooms will depend on factors such as the size and layout of each particular space, there are certain guideposts that can put you on the right path. Mayer offers the following insights:

Photo from Zillow listing.

Find your focal point

There are no hard-and-fast rules in furniture arranging, but if there is a focal point in the room — a fireplace, for instance, or a window with a beautiful view — try to place your furniture around it to draw the eye in that direction.

Keep a clear path

You always want to be invited into a room visually, without any obstructions in your path. Be mindful of the number of items you are placing in a room. Use only what you need for comfort, storage and utility, and find new homes for extraneous pieces.

Avoid the perimeter

Lining furniture along the perimeter of a room creates a very stagnant look. That being said, we don’t all have the luxury or space to float all our furniture in the center of the room. If a large piece like a couch makes most sense against the wall, float a few smaller pieces — like two comfortable armchairs — in front of it to balance the look.

Encourage conversation

No matter what size your living room is, you should always consider seating that lets you share the space with a friend. Positioning a couch and two chairs near a focal point, or even two love seats or two chaises facing each other, is a lovely way to start.

Consider dining dynamics

As a general rule, the dining table and chairs occupy the middle of a room. If there is a chandelier overhead, be sure it does not obstruct views across the table. A sideboard, hutch, console or even a chest of drawers along a wall of the room can add much-needed storage for linens and flatware, and also provide a surface for additional ambient lighting.

Think about function

To determine what pieces you’ll need in the kitchen, think about how you use the space. If you love to cook and entertain, an island or movable workstation is a sensible investment. Seating is vital as well. Choose a table and chairs if you have the room, or find comfortable stools that can tuck under a counter when not in use. If space allows, I highly recommend a couch in the kitchen!

Keep it simple

It is always nice to wake up to a view outside your windows, so if you have something lovely to look at, place your bed to take advantage of it. Next, consider all the practical things you need in the bedroom: bedside tables and lighting, a dresser or armoire to store clothing, and a chair or bench. Although it isn’t necessary for the furniture finishes to match, I do like the look of soft neutral wall colors, matching lamps on side tables and linens in natural fibers. Save pops of color for decorative pillows or throws; even the art can add a little zing to the space, but keep it simple. I also like to have a rug near the bed for warmth and softness underfoot.

Measure mindfully

Take accurate measurements of your room (and the doorways and entrances) before you start shopping for furniture. To get an idea of what will fit in the space that you have, you can “tape it out” with masking tape on the floor of an empty room using the dimensions of each prospective piece. Allow plenty of room for walking about, pulling out a chair, and accommodating whatever elements you need in order to function in the space.

Clear the clutter

I do a lot of work staging homes and apartments for sale, and the biggest words of advice I give are, “Clean out the clutter!” Clutter distracts from the beauty of a room. When guests walk in, all they’ll see is a pile of papers on the counter, toys on the floor, or laundry in the corner instead of that amazing sofa or incredible table you worked so hard for. If you want to display collections or family photos, keep them “stabled” in one place, such as a bookcase, hall table, or dedicated family photo wall, so they look neat and unified.

Planning Your Bedroom Style and Layout

Our bedrooms are not the places in our house that we show off to guests - we don't use them for hosting fine dinners or lively get togethers - but they deserve as much design attention as the other rooms. After all, more than just a place of relaxation and solace away from the bustle of the world outside, it's "the" space in the house that is just for you. If you are like most people, your bedroom is a place where you can shut the door, sit down or lie in bed and just generally enjoy a space that's calm, comfortable and private. We wrote this short guide to help you create your comfortable space where you can enjoy the personal luxury that everybody needs.

Furniture styles

We are starting of with furniture design styles, because once you know what look you are going for it becomes that much easier to visualise the look, and ultimately the feel, you want to create.

There are such a huge variety of furniture decor styles, that it's unlikely that you will run out of options, but it can be daunting to decipher which style will work best for you. A great starting point is to familiarise yourself with furniture design jargon and learn a little about each style in order to help you define and narrow down your search for the type of furniture you want. Modern, classic, rustic and contemporary are just some of the defined styles in furniture decor. You may even prefer to combine elements of several styles to create your own unique look. The ability to identify different interior design styles will provide a framework to personalise your bedroom to your individual taste.

Bedroom Furniture

Once you have the look nailed down, it's time to look at the functional elements, such as the furniture, that makes a bedroom your bedroom. When choosing furniture according to your taste, it's important to look at the quality and craftsmanship, as it is likely to stay part of the room when the paint colour and choice of curtains are long forgotten.

Begin with the bed. The bed is the focal point of any bedroom and is arguably the most important piece of furniture you will buy for the room.

Choose storage for your clothing and personal effects. Dressers, wardrobes or chests of drawers all provide excellent clothing storage.

Buy bedside tables. You will need something to hold your alarm clock, lamp, books, glasses and other items near your bed. Any small table will do. The important thing is that you like the look of it.

Think about what else you will do in your room. If you like to watch TV in your bedroom, you will need to furnish the bedroom with some kind of TV stand. You may also consider a workstation if you often work late at night or often need quick access to your equipment. Other furnishings can include a vanity, lounge chairs, floor lamps, plants or bookshelves.

Tip: Writing down everything you plan to do in your bedroom will help you to decide which pieces of furniture you need.

Layout

Space planning is most probably the trickiest part of decorating any room. If you want to really feel comfortable in your room, make sure that you have enough space to move around and that everything is accessible. Make sure that wardrobe doors and drawers can be easily opened without hitting the bed or other furniture. If your bedroom is on the smaller side, consider open shelving and beds with integrated storage. Leave a minimum of 100 cm in front of every door opening, 30 cm in front of windows and 45 cm walking space between furniture or furniture and walls. RoomSketcher is a nifty online sketching tool to that makes it easy to visualise the layout of your room.

Custom Made Furniture

What if you can't find the type of furniture that fits into your fantasy of a dream bedroom? More and more people are opting to have furniture made especially for them according to their own specifications. Custom furniture is a bit more expensive than store-bought pieces, but an individually made piece of furniture requires the kind of craftsmanship that ensures that it lasts longer than mass factory produced furniture. Custom furniture can also be considered when you want furniture that complements unique features of your house or if you need a special piece to compliment or complete an existing bedroom suite

As most modern living areas serve as through passage rooms that offers little opportunities for rest and quiet activities, the bedroom fulfills an important role as a private sanctuary. With that in mind, it's arguably the room in the house where the look, feel and layout will have the biggest impact on your well being. Proper planning will also help you to avoid underutilised space and unnecessary furniture while creating a bedroom that truly fits your needs.

Laying Out Your Living Room Furniture Like a Pro

The living room is one of the most essential and frequently used spaces of the house, so it follows that making this venue the most enjoyable is well worth the time and effort. However, many don't know the basic principles of design to make the living room user-friendly. Read on to discover these interior design tricks that will make any space a pleasure in which to spend time.

Consider the Focal Point

Is the view outside the window a city skyline or a well-manicured front yard? The living room is an ideal setting from which to enjoy this scenery, so the furniture should be situated accordingly. Similarly, living rooms may be arranged as a venue for watching sports and movies with the family, in which case the layout should be conducive to these activities and pointed toward the television. Wherever the focal point of the room, designers recommend that seating should be arranged so one may view the focal point in the most comfortable way. For example, if guests will be enjoying looking outside, then the sofa should be positioned opposite the window to allow them ease of view without craning their necks. Use of the furniture must also be considered; if one plans to lie down on the couch to watch the tube, the television should be positioned perpendicular to the couch so one can look straight ahead.

Plan for Seating

Will the room be used to entertain guests frequently? Or is the living room primarily occupied by the family? Plan the seating around the number of expected visitors and who will most often be in the room. If the living room is small, sofas are an ideal option as they have the largest seating to size ratio, whereas chairs and loveseats take up more space in the room while offering relatively fewer spots for guests. When it's time to throw a party, the room will look like it was designed by a pro if ample seating is already incorporated into the room's design instead of having to awkwardly shuffle metal folding chairs out of the closet.

Look at the Traffic Pattern

No, this doesn't mean to think about the number of cars passing by. Rather, when planning where the furniture will be placed in the living room, consider where the doors are located and what rooms are adjacent to the living room. How will family members and guests be traversing the space? Be sure that one can easily maneuver from their seat to the bathroom or kitchen without tripping. Also, consider the size of the furniture before purchasing the piece. If shopping for a studio efficiency, perhaps a six-by-two-foot coffee table is not the most practical choice. In keeping with basic feng shui, guests should be able to walk seamlessly to the door as opposed to shuffling between a bookcase and floor lamp.

The principles of design are intuitive and serve to make living comfortable and enjoyable through useful and aesthetically pleasing furniture layout. Use these tips to get started, and house visitors will be amazed at what a pleasant experience they have in a well-designed space.

5 Simple Seating Tricks That Will Transform Your Living Room

BY APRIL BLAKE

Seating arrangements can make or break a social event. Whether it's a cocktail party, a book club get-together, or a Game of Thrones binge night, you want a setup that makes socializing easy and enjoyable. The right combo of comfortable chairs, tables, and other furniture is the key to making your abode more inviting and homey. We’ve got five ways to hack your living room seating for social occasions or everyday life.

1. MAKE THE TV THE FOCAL POINT OF THE ROOM.

When people are over to watch the season finale of your favorite show, the TV becomes the obvious focal point of the gathering. You can easily calculate the optimal viewing distance for your seating based on the size of your TV. For 1080p screen, double your TV's diagonal measurement to get the proper distance in inches, which you can then convert to feet.

Let's say you have a 43-inch TV—multiply that by two and you get 86 inches, or about 7 feet, as your best viewing distance. A 48-inch screen, which is one of the most popular sizes for living rooms, will allow you 8 feet of viewing space. If you have a higher-def 4K TV screen, you can sit a little closer: Experts recommend a distance of one to 1.5 times the screen size.

Now that you have the right distance in mind, arrange your couch in front and place other chairs at varied heights at the sides and behind it. Have plenty of comfy floor cushions for those who don’t snag a sofa seat so that everyone has a good sightline to the TV.

2. CREATE A CONVERSATIONAL CIRCLE.

When the social event doesn't require everyone to face the same direction, arrange the seating in a circle around a central point. This setup works best for book club meetings and gatherings where casual conversation is the main draw. Opt for a round table at the center for setting drinks and snacks. “At a round table you can see everyone at once, whereas at a rectangular table, there’s a chance you’re not seeing the faces of people on your side two or more seats down, making it difficult to chat with them,” Whitney McGregor of Whitney McGregor Designs in Greenville, South Carolina, tells Mental Floss.

A 2007 study suggested that people are drawn to circles and softer organic shapes because the rounded edges are perceived as less dangerous than sharp edges. Create a similar feel of safety, comfort, and inclusiveness in your living room with a set of chairs around a circular coffee table or a large tufted ottoman.

3. LEAVE SOME SPACE—BUT NOT TOO MUCH— BETWEEN SEATS AND TABLES.

To keep conversation flowing, leave at least 3 feet of space between each seat (not including couches, where people are expected to chat more intimately). For example, place arm chairs about 3 feet away from the ends of the sofa or 5 to 6 feet across from the sofa. The coffee table, whether round, square, or rectangular, should sit about 14 to 18 inches from the front of the couch—far enough to provide comfortable legroom, but close enough to set a drink down without getting up.

These cushions of space prevent guests from feeling like they're sitting on top of one another, according to Apartment Therapy. But a stretch of 10 feet or more is too much to converse easily, so pull out the tape measure as needed.

4. FRESHEN A STUFFY ARRANGEMENT WITH ASYMMETRY.

It's possible to switch up the whole feeling of your room—without purchasing new furniture—by changing the existing seating and accent tables from a symmetrical to an asymmetrical arrangement, and vice versa. “Asymmetry versus symmetry can be a fickle thing,” Christy Davis of Christy Davis Interiors in Columbia, South Carolina, tells Mental Floss. “Symmetry gives a sense of wholeness and completeness, whereas asymmetry makes you think a little more because it’s not as common as symmetry.”

Do you crave that whole and complete feeling? Put two matching chairs on either side of a table to make the room seem more visually balanced and formal. For a casual look with more energy, take those same two chairs and put them in a random order: One to the left of the couch as a discrete conversational seating area, and the other on the opposite wall and farther down in the room, along with a side table and lamp, as its own smaller conversation nook.

5. ADD SURFACES FOR DRINKS AND MORE.

With every good seat comes the need for a place to set a drink, your phone, or the remote control. While you want your coffee table at least 14 inches in front of the couch, the rules for accent table placement are a little looser. Try sitting in each location in your room and checking if there’s a place to set your glass within each reaching distance. If not, add a side table or garden stool, then dress it up with plants and photos. According to The Spruce, the side table should be about the same height as the arm of the seat it's next to.

5 Tips When Shopping for New Furniture

New furniture is an excellent way to spruce up your home. A new bed of couch can not only make your home look more contemporary, stylish, or homey, it can also make you feel more comfortable and more at home in your own house. If you make a mistake when furnishing your home, it can end up haunting your for quite some time. Before making any decisions, it is important to do some planning so that you don't do anything that you might regret. Make sure that you know the furniture will fit in your home, that you can really afford it, and that it's the best deal you can get for what you need.

Take Measurements

This really is one of the most important steps. It is also a step that is so obvious that it can be easy to forget. It is not uncommon for somebody to buy a new kitchen table only to discover that it does not fit in their kitchen. Take measurements where you are going to be placing the furniture.

Figure Out Your Budget

Take an honest look at your budget before you even consider shopping. Figure out how much you can spend right now, and how much you can spend on a monthly payment. Do not exceed this amount. Be cautious with your budget as well. You never know when something unexpected might happen.

If you end up falling behind on your payments on a furnishing, you will end up paying more interest. This is especially true if you buy something on a plan that promises no interest payments. If you miss a payment on this type of plan, you will be charged incredibly high interest rates, and you will need to pay them retroactively.

Shop Around

The most important thing to do when you are looking for new furniture is to consider all of the options that are available. You can start by cutting out any options that are outside of your budget. From that point forward, visit several stores.

If you are shopping for bedding or seating, consider more than the looks. Be sure to use the furnishings in order to make sure that they are comfortable. Give them some time as well. It is not uncommon for something to feel comfortable at first, only to discover that it is actually pushing your spine out of alignment over time because it is too soft or too firm. Don't just think about how it feels against your skin, think about how much support it provides you and how it fits your body.

Similarly, it is important to take into account the quality of the materials. Will a table stand up to the test of time, or will it fall apart before you are even done paying for it? Is it build solid all the way through, or is their particle board hiding inside?

In order to fully explore your options, it is a good idea to get a second opinion. The salesmen will tell you everything in their store is perfect for you. Ask friends and acquaintances how satisfied they are with their furniture. Are they comfortable? Do they look nice? Have they stood the test of time? Has the customer service been satisfactory?

Come Prepared

Before you walk into a store, make sure that you are prepared. You must make a commitment to yourself before you enter that you won't buy anything unless you have already made your decision. It is a good idea to come prepared with a "cheat sheet" of everything you need to know, and write it down. Once you have the info, it's time to leave the store and consider your other options. Be sure to understand what your monthly payments will be, what the returns and exchanges policy is, and make sure you see it all in writing before you buy anything.

Sleep on It

Finally, once you think you have made your decision, go home and sleep on it. Your conscious mind may have made up its mind, but oftentimes your subconscious will remind you of something you might have forgotten. If you still feel the same way in the morning, buy the furnishing. You don't want to wake up after buying something only to realize that you may have made a mistake.

What Ever Happened To Waterbeds?

For kids and adults alike, waterbeds used to be the coolest—until suddenly they weren’t. After a heyday in the late 1980s in which nearly one out of every four mattresses sold was a waterbed mattress, the industry dried up in the 1990s, leaving behind a sense of unfilled promise and thousands upon thousands of unsold vinyl shells. Today, waterbeds make up only a very small fraction of overall bed and mattress sales. Many home furnishing retailers won’t sell them, and some that do say it’s been years since they last closed a deal.

So what happened? Although they were most popular in that decade of boomboxes and acid-washed jeans, waterbeds had been gaining steam since the late 1960s, and in retrospect seem to have more substance to them than other notorious fads. How did our enthusiasm for sleeping atop gallons and gallons of all-natural H2O drain away so quickly?

By some accounts, waterbeds date all the way back to 3600 BCE, when Persians filled goat-skin mattresses with water warmed by the sun. In the early 1800s, Dr. Neil Arnott, a Scottish physician, created a “hydrostatic bed” for hospital patients with bedsores. This was essentially a warm bath covered with a thin layer of rubber and then sealed up with varnish. In 1853, Dr. William Hooper of Portsmouth, England patented a therapeutic rubber mattress that could be filled with water. It, too, was for hospital patients suffering from poor circulation and bedsores. In the mid 20th century, science fiction writer Robert Heinlein—inspired by the months he spent bedridden with tuberculosis in the 1930s—described waterbeds in great detail in three of his novels. The beds he envisioned had a sturdy frame, were temperature-controlled, and contained pumps that allowed patients to control the water level inside the mattress. There were also compartments for drinks and snacks, which sounds really convenient. It was, according to Heinlein, “an attempt to design the perfect hospital bed by one who had spent too damn much time in hospital beds.”

The inventor of the modern day waterbed was an industrial design student named Charles Hall, who in 1968 submitted a waterbed prototype (made with a vinyl mattress rather than a rubber one) for his masters thesis project. Hall wanted to rethink furniture design, and was taken with the idea of fluid-filled interiors. Before settling on the waterbed, he had tried filling a chair with 300 pounds of cornstarch gel, which quickly rotted. He also tried using JELL-O as a filling, with similarly disastrous results. The introduction of water fulfilled his vision without the ick factor. During the graduating class’s thesis workshop, Hall told The Atlantic, students ignored other projects and ended up hanging out on his waterbed.

Hall established his own company, Innerspace Environments, and began manufacturing waterbeds for sale throughout California. Early customers included the band Jefferson Airplane, as well as the Smothers Brothers. Eventually Hall’s bed, which he named “The Pleasure Pit,” made its way into 32 retail locations throughout the state. Success was short-lived, however, as cheap imitators quickly flooded the market. By the early 1970s, dozens of different companies were manufacturing waterbeds, feeding the growing demand for a groovy new way to … sleep.

Although many associate waterbeds with strait-laced suburban living, back in the ‘70s they were a symbol of the free-flowing counterculture movement—more likely to be sold with incense and Doors albums than with fluffy pillows and high thread count sheets. “That fluid fixture of 1970s crash pads” was how a New York Times story from 1986 described them. The names of manufacturers and distributors reflected this: Wet Dream, Joyapeutic Aqua Beds, and Aquarius Products were a few that rolled with the times.

“Two things are better on a waterbed,” an Aquarius ad stated. “One of them is sleep.” Another ad proclaimed, “She’ll admire you for your car, she’ll respect you for your position, and she’ll love you for your waterbed.” Hippies and hip bachelors alike were the target market for the bed that promised the motion of the ocean. Hall even got in on the act, offering a $2800 “Pleasure Island” setup, complete with contour pillows, color television, directional lighting, and a bar. Hugh Hefner loved the craze, of course—Hall made him one covered in green velvet, and Hef had another that he outfitted in Tasmanian possum hair.

By the '80s, waterbeds had moved from the hazy fringe to the commercial mainstream. “It has followed the path of granola and Jane Fonda,” the Times noted. Indeed, waterbeds were available in a variety of styles, from four-post Colonials to Victorian beds with carved headboards to simple, sturdy box frames. Allergy sufferers liked having a dust-free mattress, while back pain sufferers were drawn to the beds’ free-floating quality. Advertisements by sellers like Big Sur Waterbeds played up the health benefits with shirtless, beefy dudes like this one:

People were also eager to try a new spin on something as boring as a bed. Kids, especially, loved the squishy, gurgling weirdness of a waterbed. If you were a child of the '80s, it arguably was as close to a status symbol as you could get. Manufacturers, meanwhile, fed the demand with novelty frames, bunk beds, circular love nest beds, and even waterbeds for dogs. They also improved the experience with innovations like “baffles” that cut down on the wave motion many beds created, thereby addressing the one-of-a-kind problem of people getting seasick in their own bedrooms. As waterbed mania swept the nation, specialty outlets like Waterbed Plaza, Waterbed Emporium, and the Waterbed Store opened up shop, and wave after wave of cheesy local television ads followed.

By 1984, waterbeds were a $2 billion business. At the height of their popularity, in 1987, 22 percent of all mattress sales in the U.S. were waterbed mattresses.

Here’s the thing about waterbeds, though: They were high maintenance. Installing one meant running a hose into your bedroom and filling the mattress up with hundreds of gallons of H2O—a precarious process that held the potential for a water-soaked bedroom. Waterbeds were also really, really heavy. In addition to the filled mattress, the frame—which had to support all that water weight—could be a back-breaker. When the mattress needed to be drained, an electric pump or some other nifty siphoning tricks were required. Waterbeds could also spring leaks (as Edward Scissorhands showed), which could be patched but, again, added to the cost and hassle.

In the '90s, it became clear that the novelty of waterbeds couldn’t overcome the additional work they required. By that time, competitors like Tempur-Pedic and Select Comfort were also coming out with mattress innovations that offered softness and flexibility without making customers run a garden hose through their second-floor bedroom window.

These days, the waterbed market is still going, albeit on a much, much smaller scale. Mattress models are lighter than the models of decades past, and come with nifty accessories like foam padding and interior fibers that further cut down on the wave effect. They’re also outfitted with tubes or “bladders” that take in water rather than the entire mattress, making the experience less like filling an enormous water balloon. Most models are quite sophisticated, in fact. The Boyd Comfort Supreme mattress has all the technical specs of a household gadget: three-layer lumbar support, four-layer reinforced corners, “thermavinyl” heat resistant bottom layer, five-layer wave reduction system. That’s a lot of layers! There are also airframe waterbeds that stand firm on their own, and sophisticated temperature-control devices that keep sleepers warm. Marty Pojar, owner of The Waterbed Doctor (which takes mainly online and phone orders), told The Orange County Register that most of his orders come from customers in the Midwest and Northeast, where customers want to hop into a warm bed on cold winter nights.

Like those who still play Sega Genesis or prefer a flip phone to an iPhone, waterbed customers are fiercely loyal to their retro trend. But their enthusiasm alone won’t likely bring waterbeds back to the mainstream. Indeed, even the name “waterbed” carries negative connotations, retailers note. Pojar prefers to call them “flotation” beds. A Washington D.C. furniture salesman interviewed by The Atlantic said he oftentimes doesn’t tell customers when they’re lying on a waterbed. "Everybody who tries the ones we have on our floor is very happy with the feel, but some people won't get it just because it's a waterbed," he said. These days, the most promising market for soft, squishy waterbeds may, oddly enough, be cows.

Before You Begin Shopping for Your New Home Furnishings, Make a Plan

Whether you are planning to initiate a new look or redo some choices of your home decor, the first thing you need to do is "Make a plan."

You have probably heard the old saying that any job, any project is 90 to 95 percent thinking and planning and 5 to 10 percent of actual execution. So it should be that your beginning action with furnishing or renewing the furnishing of your home is in the planning stage. Make a good plan.

Number one on your list will be to measure and catalog the room you want to begin with so that you will really know dimensions and the space available you want to furnish. If your plan is to add items to a room you will definitely benefit from a detailed layout of all the items already in that room and the space available for anything more.

You might be thinking about the theme for your decor and you may be looking at various furnishing items with the thought that this one or that one would be just what you need in your living room, dining room, bedroom or any room you are planning to furnish.

While those ideas are good to keep in mind, the first you need to know just what space is available before you decide just which item or items will fit your theme/decor ideas.

Let's start a plan with the living room. I would suggest that your first action is to draw a diagram of that room on a plain piece of paper, making the notation of the length of each wall, the locations of windows and door and any other opening to the room such as archways, hallways or openings to another room, etc.

You will need to know the measurements when you begin to plan your furnishings. For instance, you would not want to purchase an overstuffed couch and ottoman that might be something you love to look at and would love to snuggle into if it would impede the flow in and out of the room. Sometimes the furnishings you really crave are the ones you need to avoid and find a substitute that will more efficiently and graciously fit into the size and character of your room.

So your next action is to find the sizes and types of furnishings you would like to include in this room. If you have some home furnishings magazines you might take one of them and look for an item that is similar to the one you are interested in adding to the room. If your magazine is old you might cut out a picture or two that is like that item of furniture you have been considering. Don't forget you will need to make a notation of the true size of any item or items you are considering.

Once you have found an item and want to see how it will fit in the diagram you created of your living room you need only to place it where you think it would be perfect. You will be able to tell in an instant if it is the right size for the wall behind it, or if it would look better in another location. You would also be able to know if it is really the right piece of furniture for your room.

Even if you do not find a picture of a furnishing item in a catalog, you could try online, or just take paper and cut the dimensions and label it with "Couch" "Chair" or whatever you are considering.

You may think this is time-consuming and perhaps you will consider it boring, but the time you spend making sure the furnishings items you would like to place in this room and will allow your room to look and feel the way you want it to, will save you so much grief.

If you skip this step and just decide to make a purchase of something you like that may be the wrong size or character for your desired theme or challenges the limits of the use of your room you will struggle to find a way to make it work, and you will be disappointed in the result. So take the time to make an outline of the room, check what furnishings will fit and eliminate those that are just not right and you will be glad the more time you take with this "plan".

Once you have placed the various furnishings around and found just the right spot for each then you can begin to consider the colors of your chairs and/or futons or couches, you can also consider the accent pieces you will want to incorporate into your design theme to create that ambiance you desire.

There are endless possibilities with furniture choices and accent pieces, those choices will be the fun part, but they will take planning also so that each piece will complement the surroundings and not clash with your other furnishings and you will want any new additions to compliment the other pieces in the room.

Begin with the plan, an outline of the room and then enjoy finding and choosing the actual furnishing you would like to add to create your design theme.

Four Tips to Keep Your Bedroom Furniture From Looking Bland

Often, people spend their time at home relaxing in shared spaces like the living room and kitchen. Many homeowners put an emphasis on keeping these areas stylish, upgrading components and furniture to make their homes feel elegant and give them a sense of relaxation and peace. Upgrading a private area like the master suite can easily make a well-lived-in home feel new again. When upgrading to new bedroom furniture, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Consider the Size

Bedroom furniture comes in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and styles and certain pieces simply won't work in certain rooms. Before going to the furniture store, take the measurements of your room. This will ensure that only furniture that fits is considered. As a general rule of thumb, avoid using large statement pieces in small spaces.

Get Creative with Lampshades

If a room needs nothing more than a few new accent pieces to enhance the existing decor's style, don't be afraid to mix and match colours and themes. Sometimes, a new lamp is all that's needed to completely transform the look and feel, and playing fast and loose with existing styles can make a design look even trendier than otherwise possible. There's no need to settle on plain colours; patterns and vibrant complementary colours can transform the space into a new, relaxing paradise.

Mix and Match Furniture Pieces

While a matching bedroom set can create a cohesive theme in a room, adding pieces from multiple styles or brands can create a unique appearance that expresses an individual's style. Don't be afraid to combine different finishes, colours, and styles to create a unique theme. For example, use light-coloured throw rugs to add brightness with a large, dark wood statement piece. Add soft classic accents to complement a sleek contemporary bed set.

Don't Neglect Storage Options

Clutter can make even the largest rooms feel small, but not all bedrooms feature adequate storage space or solutions. Consider adding bookshelves to add more vertical storage to the space. If storage is at an absolute premium, look for a bed set with built-in drawers or a headboard with shelves to create more storage space. Rather than storing everything on the top of a dresser, invest in a nightstand that provides adequate storage for an alarm clock, books, or any other necessities best kept close at hand.

Bedroom furniture should be both practical and stylish, and upgrading a few key items in a bedroom can dramatically change the look of the space. Don't settle on the same bland look; follow these tips and create a unique space that fosters both a sense of relaxation and comfort.

Tips on Purchasing a New Dining Table for a Growing Family

A dining table that is too small makes meal times cluttered, disorderly, and uncomfortable. A dining table that is too large may strain conversations and make people feel awkward or alienated. If the table is way too large for the floor space, everyone might end up with their chairs against the wall, which makes going to and from their seats a struggle every meal time.

For sure, you want mealtimes to be a relaxed and comfortable time where everyone on the table enjoys great food and good company. For this to happen, you have to invest time and effort in finding a dining table that's just the right size and form.
What are your needs now and in the near future?
The key to a successful purchase lies in the accurate estimation of your needs. Before you shop for a new dining table, evaluate the current situation at home. How many people dine there regularly? Do you receive guests often? Do you entertain frequently so that guests figure importantly in the estimation? To determine the number of places, include every person who eats at the house regularly and then add two more places. These are for guests who arrive unbidden and accept your impromptu invitation to dine. To avoid overcrowding, it is advisable to allot extra space for other people.
What are the important measurements to take?
To avoid bumping elbows with the next person, everyone must have a comfortable "personal space" on the table, which is at least 24 inches in width. This space allows you to add a place or two when company arrives and stays in for dinner and you can be confident there won't be overcrowding. If you don't want chairs to bump against the wall every time somebody stands up and sits back down, there ought to be a 32-inch space between the walls of the room and the dining table.
What is the ideal table shape for a small dining area?
While you may have a certain preference in terms of the shape of the table, you must base the final decision on other considerations, such as the number of seats, and the dimensions of the room. For instance, if the space is rather limited, it is best to avoid shapes with sharp corners. That rules out square and rectangular tables. Round tables allow for more people to sit down to dinner if the floor space is already confining. To promote the illusion of space and airiness, choose a table with a light color and fine lines. The chairs must not be bulky as well. Curves are also more inviting, so much so that round tables give the dining area a sense of informality that immediately puts people at ease.
You can always go for the classic rectangular table, especially if the room you have is narrow and long. This is the preferred choice for large families that require more than five seats. The most important thing to remember is to choose based on your needs instead of trends and styles that other people are choosing for their own families.

Sofa - An Essential Furniture Entity for Every Home

A comfortable sofa is a necessary item needed for every family, it might be for a family get together for a party or just to watch TV. Think for a minute can you watch your favorite television show with a comfortable sofa. Of course not possible, as an uncomfortable sofa might ruin the ease with its perturbing styling or seating. Although you have many choices to pick from the sofas yet buying a suitable couch or sofa is one great decision that you make with a great care.

How to buy a right sofa

There are people who buy furniture without considering the needed tips and this is the point where most of you make serious mistakes. It is a huge mistake because by doing so you might get a defective piece or an unsuitable sofa which is a total waste of your money. So if you want to avoid these things you might have to remember the below-mentioned points

The filling and the material of the sofa

The more comfortable your sofa, the money invested in better. There are some people who bargain the sofa material and its filling over its appearance, which is totally wrong. This is so because the filling speaks of its durability and quality. Although you have a large choice in the sofa filling material, but foam - filled are suitable over others as they are firm and does not cause any type of allergies.

The outer covering

The sofa is not just a piece of furniture, but also decoration ornament as well. This is why you must target its outer covering as well as its fabric. Also, remember the type sofa you are looking for, are you searching for a fabric or a leather sofa? A leather sofa is suitable if you are looking for hand wearing and traditional sofa and if you want a sofa whose cover can be removed and machine washable then fabric one is the best choice. In both leather and fabric, you have plenty of choices to choose, from color, style, and pattern.

The size and the shape

The shape and size of the sofa are also important before making your final thoughts on buying a sofa. The shape and size you prefer must be according to the area of the room so that it does not disturb the movement in the room. Choose irrespective of the size and style of the sofa is a big mistake that many commit when buying a sofa for their home or room which can also make it very congested. So remember not to make this mistake and also measure the size of the room including the window and door sizes before choosing the sofa.

In short, always place the sofa in the right way in your home to boost its decoration. Talk to a seller who deals furniture in your area to find out the right color, shape, and size suitable for a specific room size.
