How to Care for Leather Sofas

There are few pieces of furniture that are as beautiful and timeless as one made from well-crafted leather. Leather sofas are relatively low-maintenance. But if you do have one, you want to make sure to take good care of it to help it look it's best. Here are a few tips to help you protect your furniture:

1. Buy Quality Furniture

The first step to making sure your couch will stand the test of time is to buy a high-quality product. Quality leather will last a lifetime; in fact, it will become more comfortable over time. While leather sofas may not be cheap, with proper care, they can be a worthy investment since they can last a long time. Look for full grain leather, as this is the strongest and highest quality. Split grain is not made with the full skin and therefore will not last as long. Also, make sure that you choose a couch with a sturdy frame that will last through the years.

2. Clean With a Dry Cloth

It should be enough to wipe down your sofa regularly with a clean, dry cloth, and vacuum any crumbs or other debris when necessary. Wipe up any spills immediately so they don't have time to soak in. Occasionally, if you have a tough spot, you may have to use a slightly damp cloth - use as little water as possible and let the area air-dry naturally. Otherwise, avoid using water, soaps, or other cleaners, as even mild detergents can discolor over time while causing drying and cracking. If you are concerned about having a lot of spills, look for a one that has been treated with a surface protectant, and choose a darker couch as lighter options may stain.

3. Avoid Direct Sunlight

Leather sofas need to be kept out of direct sunlight or other bright lights. This is because they are made from a natural material that is prone to drying. If you allow your couch to sit in direct sunlight, it may start to discolor and crack. You will also want to avoid areas of your home that are too hot or too cold.

4. Use Conditioner

Leather sofas need to be treated with a special conditioner every six to twelve months. This is usually a creamy product that is buffed in with a cloth to help prevent drying and cracking. It may also help protect the color of your couch. You can find these conditioners at most furniture stores, or at auto parts stores as they can also be used for car upholstery. You can even find recipes online to make your own conditioner at home. No matter which option you choose, be sure to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions, and it's always a good idea to test any product on a small, inconspicuous spot before you use it on the whole piece.

If you follow these simple steps, you will have a lovely piece of furniture that you and your family can enjoy for years to come!

Choosing The Right Furniture For The Living Room

Everyone loves to live in a house that is well furnished and decorated. However, decorating the living room can be one of the most tedious tasks at hand. Also, one thing that makes that task even more tedious is picking up the furniture.

So, in order to make things a bit easy for you, here are a few tips on how you can choose your living room furniture:

Measure up - The first thing that you need to do is get the measurements of the room correct in order to get the furniture of the perfect size. So make sure that you measure the length, breadth and the width of the walls carefully.

Creating floor plans - The next thing you must do is take a grid paper and make a floor plan. This will help you to decide how much space you can spare for the furniture and how much free space you have left in the room.

Measure your doorways - In order to avoid problems at the time of delivery, you must measure up your doorways and order only those items of furniture that can be easily moved in and out of the doorway.

Staging the room - Once you have decided how much space you want to allot to the furniture, you must mark those spaces with a tape in order to get an idea of what the room will look like in the near future.

Start your selection - Once you have done the things mentioned above, you must start making your purchase decisions. Thus, you must consider the kind of décor your room has and the vibe of your house. Once that is done, you must start picking out with the basic things like a sofa, an armchair, etc.

Pick up good quality pieces - Quality does come before quantity. So, even if some of the pieces do cost more, it is better to choose good quality products over flimsy ones as they tend to last longer. So, you must check the fabric of the sofa, chairs, etc. and buy the ones that have good quality.

Coordination is the key - In the end, you want your living room to look beautiful and pleasing to the eyes. Therefore, in order to ensure this, you must see that all the pieces of furniture that you purchase are coordinated with each other and go well with each other. You do not want one piece of furniture not going with another as it will tend to look awkward and disorderly. So, make sure that whatever pieces you buy, they gel with each other.

If you follow the above-given tips, you will end up having a beautiful living room of your own.

How to Arrange a Bedroom

Learn how to arrange a room and place bedroom furniture in a way that works for the space.

To arrange a bedroom, consider door and window placement, the room's dimension and the size of your furniture. Place the largest pieces first and then work in the smaller pieces to create a bedroom that is arranged to suit your space and needs.

Start by placing your bed and dresser, the two largest pieces of furniture. Usually the bed is placed along the room's longest wall or opposite the bedroom door. Next, pull in smaller pieces -- such as night stands, ottomans, desks and extra chairs for lounging.

Tips on Purchasing a New Dining Table for a Growing Family

A dining table that is too small makes meal times cluttered, disorderly, and uncomfortable. A dining table that is too large may strain conversations and make people feel awkward or alienated. If the table is way too large for the floor space, everyone might end up with their chairs against the wall, which makes going to and from their seats a struggle every meal time.
For sure, you want mealtimes to be a relaxed and comfortable time where everyone on the table enjoys great food and good company. For this to happen, you have to invest time and effort in finding a dining table that's just the right size and form.
What are your needs now and in the near future?
The key to a successful purchase lies in the accurate estimation of your needs. Before you shop for a new dining table, evaluate the current situation at home. How many people dine there regularly? Do you receive guests often? Do you entertain frequently so that guests figure importantly in the estimation? To determine the number of places, include every person who eats at the house regularly and then add two more places. These are for guests who arrive unbidden and accept your impromptu invitation to dine. To avoid overcrowding, it is advisable to allot extra space for other people.
What are the important measurements to take?
To avoid bumping elbows with the next person, everyone must have a comfortable "personal space" on the table, which is at least 24 inches in width. This space allows you to add a place or two when company arrives and stays in for dinner and you can be confident there won't be overcrowding. If you don't want chairs to bump against the wall every time somebody stands up and sits back down, there ought to be a 32-inch space between the walls of the room and the dining table.
What is the ideal table shape for a small dining area?
While you may have a certain preference in terms of the shape of the table, you must base the final decision on other considerations, such as the number of seats, and the dimensions of the room. For instance, if the space is rather limited, it is best to avoid shapes with sharp corners. That rules out square and rectangular tables. Round tables allow for more people to sit down to dinner if the floor space is already confining. To promote the illusion of space and airiness, choose a table with a light color and fine lines. The chairs must not be bulky as well. Curves are also more inviting, so much so that round tables give the dining area a sense of informality that immediately puts people at ease.
You can always go for the classic rectangular table, especially if the room you have is narrow and long. This is the preferred choice for large families that require more than five seats. The most important thing to remember is to choose based on your needs instead of trends and styles that other people are choosing for their own families.

How to Choose Furniture for Your Home

So you bought a home and you need to furnish it. Where do you start and what do you get? Let's take a look at the options you have available to you. First we'll go through the home; there's the kitchen, living room, formal dining room, and two bedrooms. The first decision you need to make before we begin is do you want quality or quantity? Do you want quality, well-built furniture or cheap mass-produced items? The quality may cost you a bit more initially, but in the long run it will be in your best interest to invest in well-built furniture that will last a lifetime. To help you choose a well-known quality dealer in your area we will now go into some details to help you with your choices.
In the kitchen you are going to need a breakfast table and chairs. There are many options here. You can go with a casual Formica table and chairs like Mom and Dad had when you were growing up to a more formal solid wood model. The thing you need to be aware of in choosing pieces is their functionality and construction. The better the material and workmanship the longer they will last you. This is a very important piece of the puzzle to take into account, as this will more than likely not be the last home you will live in.
The next room we'll deal with is the living room. The biggest furniture decision here is the couch. Although they may all look the same, construction methods vary wildly. Make sure that whatever kind of couch you choose is constructed tightly. Some of the better, longer-lasting couches use solid wood frames with tongue and grove fittings for the joints. Many manufacturers prefer screws and glue for the joints; both methods are acceptable. Remember the better the construction the longer the piece will last. If you have a formal dining room in your new home and need a formal dining table, that same advice goes for your dining table. Solid wood is the key here. Some formal dining tables are glass but the wood ones are extremely elegant and come in variations from solid wood like cherry and walnut to a less expensive base wood covered with veneers. Don't forget guest chairs, side tables, and lamps. The same parameters apply with these choices. See that they match or fit in with the style of your couch and guest chairs.
Next we come to the bedroom. There are endless choices for beds and end tables. They range from the traditional spring mattresses to memory foam and airbeds. This is of course a personal choice on your part but the look and feel of these fixtures should be consistent with your other choices. Many times you can tie this piece into you other choices with the headboard and end tables and lamp choices. If you have children and need new bedroom furniture for them, you can look at the current collection available at the furniture dealer you have chosen to work with. Of course choices will vary somewhat depending on whether you are buying for a boy or a girl. But the same considerations of quality and workmanship apply here as they do with your other choices.
